Zero Waste Cities

Cooperation between the municipal administrations

During a delegation visit to San Francisco in August 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the cities of San Francisco and Kiel.

It was agreed that the cities, both of which are also "Zero Waste Cities", would work closely together and exchange experiences and specific challenges as well as common goals, particularly in the areas of waste prevention, recycling and waste management. The Department of Environment in San Francisco as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Waste Management Company in Kiel, as the specialist departments of the two partner cities, are in close contact regarding activities, legal framework conditions and the management of consumer behavior. There is a particular focus on the possibilities of waste prevention.

In 2019, the city administrations of Kiel and San Francisco engaged in an intensive professional exchange on the topic of environmental protection. In September, two zero waste experts were guests in Kiel. Among other things, they visited the Kiel waste management company (ABK) and the waste-to-energy plant. Discussions with the city's environmental protection department were also on the agenda.
