Bo Harley Lenschau is a freelance artist in the field of music and photography and studied photography, design and journalism in San Francisco from late 2019 to mid-2021. He captured his impressions with his camera and dealt with questions that go beyond the borders of San Francisco and also affect cities like Bo's hometown of Kiel.
Zero Sugar is a photographic examination of the city and coexistence of a young person in San Francisco. The photographs document the visible changes in public space during the coronavirus pandemic and question social mechanisms of isolation, privilege and exclusion. Bo Lentschau's work invites us to take a fresh look at empathy as an attitude in urban coexistence.
More detailed description
The core of the book Zero Sugar, the photographs, was born out of a naive and curious urge to get to know the city of San Francisco.
Bo, a young man from northern Germany, starts his studies in this new city at the beginning of 2020 and finds himself back in times of the pandemic. In his personal observations, he documents how public space has been renegotiated: Closed facilities, improvised street concerts, markets on sidewalks or even the exclusion of homeless people from emergency shelters. The result was a new cityscape that unintentionally foregrounded existing fractures and contradictions in urban life.
Then began the search for patterns, explanations and the confrontation of one's own identity in all of this, as an attempt at classification and emotional processing.
A broader reflection on privilege, isolation and social divisions developed - between the tech elite and the marginalized, between sight and repression, between empathy and blunting.
The debate raised questions that go beyond the borders of San Francisco and also affect cities such as Bo's home town of Kiel. The title Zero Sugar stands for the search for control and balance in an everyday life characterized by contradictions - and ultimately asks how much space we as a society are prepared to concede to others.
